Grand Monster Slam

DOS

Grand Monster Slam is a fantasy sports game set on the fictional world of GhoLD, where creatures from various fantasy races compete in a bizarre tournament. You control an unnamed dwarf who must face opponents including trolls, orcs, ogres, imps, and eventually a golden goblin named Winner, the final boss based on developer Golden Goblins' logo. Matches take place on a small pitch viewed from a fixed 3D perspective. The aim is to kick all six of your Beloms — brown, trembling, spherical creatures with faces — onto the opponent's side, then run across to claim victory. You can aim shots with variable power and direction, and hitting your opponent stuns them briefly. Kicking a Belom into the stands triggers a penalty kick using a duck-like Pelvan. Between matches, two minigames appear: "Revenge of the Beloms" requires defending against attacking Beloms with a pole, while "Faulton Feeding" challenges you to kick Beloms into the mouths of frog-like Faultons on pillars. The game is based on the 1985 arcade game Penguin Wars.

DOS

The DOS version was published by Rainbow Arts and released in 1989 in North America, with a German release following in 1991 . While preserving the core gameplay of the Amiga and Atari ST versions, this port suffers from notable technical compromises. The music was composed by Jochen "Mad Max" Hippel, who also contributed to the Atari ST soundtrack . According to a contemporary review in The One magazine, the DOS conversion lost much of the game's essential atmosphere, as the spot effects from other versions did not make the transition to IBM-compatibles . The graphics were also criticized as blocky and suffering from the limited palette available to EGA/VGA hardware at the time .
