Grand Monster Slam

Amiga

Grand Monster Slam is a 1989 sports-fantasy hybrid published by Rainbow Arts and developed by Golden Goblins. Loosely inspired by the 1985 arcade game Penguin Wars, the game reimagines the formula in a medieval fantasy setting with over-the-top humour. The story takes place in the world of GhoLD, where every five years various races (orcs, trolls, goblins, minotaurs) compete in the Grand Monster Slam tournament. The player controls a nameless dwarf participating for the first time, aiming to become champion and win the yellow jersey and gold medal. The game is divided into three leagues and revolves around kicking strange round creatures called Beloms.

Amiga

Released in 1989 for the Amiga, Grand Monster Slam is considered the definitive version of the game. It fully utilises the system's capabilities, offering colourful graphics with well-animated sprites and a humorous style that does justice to the game's crazy concept. Animations of the Beloms trembling as they await being kicked, and opponents' reactions, are among the most appreciated details. The soundtrack, composed by Chris Hülsbeck, accompanies the player with catchy tunes that enhance the atmosphere. Gameplay is smooth and responsive, with controls allowing players to gauge power and direction by holding the joystick button. The Amiga version was praised for its immediate playability and originality, earning a place at number 100 in Amiga Power's top 100 games. Despite critical success, the lack of a two-player mode and some repetitiveness limited its long-term appeal. The original packaging included two pewter figurines of the golden goblin Winner, the final boss inspired by the Golden Goblins logo.
