Cyberball is a futuristic sports-action game reimagining American football in a violent, robot-filled 2022. The ball is a 350-pound bomb ticking toward detonation. Two teams of seven giant robots battle on the gridiron; the offense must advance past the "defuse line" before the bomb explodes. Crossing the 50-yard line, losing possession, or scoring resets the timer. Gameplay mirrors real football with runs and passes—the quarterback chooses from three targets—but field goals and punts are absent. A two-player co-op mode lets one pass while the other receives. Developed by Atari Games, this arcade classic was published for home computers in 1990 by Domark under license from Tengen.
Commodore 64
The C64 conversion, by Quixel and released in 1990, was hailed as a technical triumph faithful to the arcade. Coding by Christopher West, graphics by Anthony West, title track by Matt Furniss. Zzap!64 awarded it 78%, praising "attractive sprites, slick scrolling and good presentation screens," noting smooth scrolling, excellent play selection, and rewarding gameplay, though lacking two-player competitive mode and Turbo Boost. Unlike other versions, the C64 port features a vertical, top-down view with limited horizontal scrolling. Intro music is well-received, but in-game effects are minimal and gameplay can be stop-start due to tactical interruptions. Still, it stands as a highly playable and visually appealing American Football game, well worth a look for fans.
