Cyberball is a futuristic sports simulation reimagining American football for the 21st century. Set in a world of giant, armoured robots, players control a seven-man team aiming to carry the ball across the opponent's goal line. The core twist: the ball is explosive. Its internal fuse burns from "cool" to "warm," "hot," and finally "critical." Players have four downs to advance ten yards to a defuse line; success resets the fuse, failure explodes the ball, destroys the carrier, and turns over possession. The game includes exhibition and tournament modes, with teams like the San Francisco Hitmen and Chicago Killers. Players can upgrade robotic avatars varying in speed, size, and skills using bonuses earned during play. Robots have finite durability, wearing down after tackles and emitting smoke before exploding. This blend of strategic play-calling, resource management, and constant pressure creates a tense, engaging experience.
Amstrad CPC
Published by Domark in 1990, this version features a top-down perspective instead of the isometric view used in the Amiga version, a choice praised by critics for improving playability despite losing some 3D effect. Graphics were considered well-executed, with colourful robotic sprites. The soundtrack was composed by Ben Daglish and is regarded by fans as one of the best on the system . However, gameplay suffers from noticeable slowdown due to calculation times on the Z80 processor. Unlike other home computer versions, the Amstrad CPC port is single-player only. Despite technical limitations, it received positive reviews, with Amstrad Action awarding 82%, and remains appreciated for its fun factor and excellent music.
