Cyberball is a futuristic sports game developed and published by Atari Games, released for arcades in September 1988. The game presents a unique take on American football, set in the year 2022, where players control a team of seven robotic avatars with different speeds, sizes, and skill sets. The core innovation is the explosive ball, which progresses through "cool," "warm," "hot," and "critical" stages as plays are run. To prevent detonation, the ball must be reset by crossing the 50-yard line or via a change of possession. If a robot is tackled while holding a critical ball, both are destroyed. Robots have finite durability, wearing down with each tackle until they emit smoke and flames; a flaming robot explodes upon being hit, causing a fumble. Players select from run, pass, or option plays on offense, and short, medium, or long defenses.
Arcade
The arcade version featured a distinctive cabinet with two monitors at a 90-degree angle, each with two sets of controls for up to four players. This allowed for one-on-one, co-op, or two-versus-two matches where teams could not see each other's play-calling, adding strategic deception. The hardware used two Motorola 68000 main CPUs and a 6502 sound CPU, delivering detailed visuals at 672x240 pixels per monitor. Cyberball was a popular title, fostering a competitive community and leading to tournaments across the United States. In 1989, Atari released Tournament Cyberball 2072 with conversion kits, adding over 100 new plays and "Game Breakers" mode. The original was later ported to Sega Genesis, Nintendo Entertainment System, Amiga, and Atari ST.
