Wrath of the Demon

Amiga

Wrath of the Demon is a fantasy hack-and-slash action game where you control a bare-chested hero on a quest to defeat a demon threatening the kingdom. After a wizard summons the demon, a horde of monsters is unleashed across the land. The game blends different gameplay styles across its levels. You begin on horseback, galloping through continuously scrolling landscapes with parallax effects, jumping over obstacles, punching flying enemies, and collecting potions. Subsequent levels alternate between single-screen sword duels against large bosses or groups, and side-scrolling action where you walk and fight monsters with fists or blade. The gameplay is often compared to Shadow of the Beast in style, though it differentiates itself with its mix of horseback riding, fighting, and exploration.

Released in early 1991 by Canadian developer Abstrax and published by ReadySoft, the Amiga version was praised for its technical excellence. Programmed by David Foster, Pierre Proulx, and Martin Ross, with art by Claude Pelletier and Stéphane Ross, the game featured stunning parallax scrolling, classy animations, and atmospheric sound. Music was composed by David Whittaker. ACE magazine gave it an 884 out of 1000 score, calling it technically the most accomplished game yet written for the Amiga, even better than Shadow of the Beast II. The One awarded 79%, praising its superlative graphics and presentation, though noting gameplay could become repetitive. While visually impressive, the high difficulty and pattern-based combat made it best suited for dedicated players who appreciate the Shadow of the Beast style.
