Doom is a first-person shooter and a landmark title in video game history. You play as a nameless space marine, the sole survivor of a demonic invasion that has overrun the Union Aerospace Corporation's research facilities on the moons of Mars. Your mission is to fight through hordes of hellish creatures—from possessed soldiers to fireball-throwing Imps and the fearsome pinky demon—across three episodes of nightmarish levels. Armed with a devastating arsenal including a chainsaw, shotgun, chaingun, rocket launcher, and the iconic BFG 9000, you must blast your way to the source of the invasion and close the gateway to Hell.

Released on September 1, 1995 by Williams Entertainment, this port runs on a red cartridge featuring the Super FX 2 chip and uses a custom Reality Engine programmed by Randy Linden, not the original Doom engine . It features 22 levels from the PC version, retaining the Cyberdemon and Spiderdemon bosses absent from other console ports . However, technical compromises are significant: floors and ceilings lack texture mapping, enemies always face the player due to front-only sprites , and the game runs in a windowed display. The acclaimed soundtrack features new SPC700 arrangements praised by fans, but there is no save system, multiplayer requires an XBAND modem , and the shotgun functions as a single projectile weapon. Circle-strafing is impossible, framerate is low, and far-off enemies are heavily pixelated . The Japanese release restores episode access restrictions from the original's unique difficulty system .
