Doom is a first-person shooter and a landmark title in video game history. You play as a nameless space marine, the sole survivor of a demonic invasion that has overrun the Union Aerospace Corporation's research facilities on the moons of Mars and Deimos. Your mission is to fight through hordes of hellish creatures—from possessed soldiers to fireball-throwing Imps and the fearsome pinky demon—across an episode of increasingly nightmarish levels. Armed with a devastating arsenal including a chainsaw, shotgun, chaingun, rocket launcher, and the iconic BFG 9000, you must blast your way to the source of the invasion and close the gateway to Hell.
Atari Jaguar
Released on November 28, 1994 by Atari, this version was the first official console port of Doom to enter development, programmed by John Carmack and Dave Taylor of id Software . It features 24 levels, comprising 22 reworked PC maps and two entirely new ones . The game was the basis for subsequent ports to 32X, 3DO, GBA, and PlayStation . The exclusive two-player mode (co-op/deathmatch) requires the JagLink accessory . A notorious technical trade-off is the total lack of in-game music, as the DSP chip handling music is instead used for game logic . However, the Jaguar controller allows direct selection of all weapons via dedicated buttons .
