Toy Story 2: Buzz Lightyear to the Rescue! is a 3D platformer based on the 1999 animated film. You control Buzz Lightyear across 15 movie-inspired levels, from Andy's house to Al's Toy Barn and an airport, to rescue Woody from greedy collector Al McWhiggin. Buzz can run, jump, double-jump, perform a spin attack, and fire his wrist laser, aimable from a first-person helmet view. Each level contains five Pizza Planet tokens obtained by completing objectives: collecting coins, finding lost sheep, defeating mini-bosses, racing, or solving puzzles. Five permanent power-ups are unlocked by recovering Mr. Potato Head's body parts. Boss battles including the Evil Emperor Zurg conclude each zone. The game features original voice actors and Randy Newman's music.
PlayStation
Released in November 1999, the PlayStation version was the lead platform developed by Traveller's Tales. Critical reception was mixed. Reviewers praised the vibrant graphics, faithful recreation of the film's world, and engaging level design, considering it one of the better licensed platformers on the system. However, criticism focused heavily on the awkward camera system, which required frequent stops to adjust view, making platforming segments frustrating. Boss design was considered simplistic, with each enemy having only one attack pattern. While not reaching the heights of Crash Bandicoot or Spyro, the PlayStation version was widely regarded as the best console version, outperforming the technically compromised N64 and Dreamcast ports. For film fans or younger players, it remains a competent and charming platformer, held back by its camera but still enjoyable.
