Toy Story 2: Buzz Lightyear to the Rescue! is a 3D platformer based on the 1999 animated film. You control Buzz Lightyear across 15 movie-inspired levels, from Andy's house to Al's Toy Barn and an airport, to rescue Woody from greedy collector Al McWhiggin. Buzz can run, jump, double-jump, perform a spin attack, and fire his wrist laser, aimable from a first-person helmet view. Each level contains five Pizza Planet tokens obtained by completing objectives: collecting coins, finding lost sheep, defeating mini-bosses, racing, or solving puzzles. Five permanent power-ups are unlocked by recovering Mr. Potato Head's body parts. Boss battles including the Evil Emperor Zurg conclude each zone. The game features original voice actors and Randy Newman's music.
Nintendo 64
Released in late 1999 by Traveller's Tales, the N64 version received mixed reviews. Due to cartridge limitations, all full-motion video cutscenes were replaced with static screenshots and text, a major downgrade from the PlayStation version. Reviewers praised the intuitive controls and solid platforming mechanics. However, criticism focused on poor, inconsistent frame rates, washed-out blurry textures, and noticeable pop-in. Critics concluded the port was rushed, with development focused on PlayStation first. The N64 version was judged functional and playable for younger audiences but inferior to its 32-bit counterpart and outclassed by Super Mario 64 and Banjo-Kazooie. A competent but compromised effort best left to dedicated fans or those with no other option.
