Golden Axe is a seminal fantasy side-scrolling beat 'em up set in the land of Yuria. The evil entity Death Adder has invaded the kingdom, kidnapped the King and Princess, and seized the legendary Golden Axe. Players choose from three distinct heroes: Ax Battler, a barbarian seeking revenge for his mother; Tyris Flare, an amazon mourning her parents; and Gilius Thunderhead, a dwarf warrior. The gameplay involves battling waves of soldiers and mythical creatures using weapon strikes and powerful magic spells. A unique mechanic allows players to kick small imps to recover health or magic pots, and mount "Bizarrians"—creatures like dragons and cockatrices—to gain a tactical advantage in combat.

Master System

Released in 1989 by Sega, the Master System version is a unique interpretation of the arcade classic. Due to hardware limitations, the game was reworked into a single-player experience where you only play as Tarik (a character visually identical to Ax Battler). However, the developers compensated for this by allowing the player to select which magic type to use—Earth, Fire, or Thunder—effectively incorporating the powers of the three original heroes into one character. The graphics are impressively colorful for an 8-bit console, featuring large sprites and well-defined backgrounds that capture the "Sega" aesthetic of the era. Despite the absence of cooperative play, it introduced an expanded "survival" mode and maintained the core mechanics of riding beasts and battling iconic bosses. It is remembered as a solid, polished port that proved the Master System could handle complex arcade conversions with style.
