Golden Axe is a seminal fantasy side-scrolling beat 'em up set in the land of Yuria. The evil entity Death Adder has invaded the kingdom, kidnapped the King and Princess, and seized the legendary Golden Axe. Players choose from three distinct heroes: Ax Battler, a barbarian seeking revenge for his mother; Tyris Flare, an amazon mourning her parents; and Gilius Thunderhead, a dwarf warrior. The gameplay involves battling waves of soldiers and mythical creatures using weapon strikes and powerful magic spells. A unique mechanic allows players to kick small imps to recover health or magic pots, and mount "Bizarrians"—creatures like dragons and cockatrices—to gain a tactical advantage in combat.
Megadrive
Released in late 1989, the Mega Drive version is arguably the most famous home port and was a key title in establishing Sega's 16-bit console dominance. Developed internally by Sega, it is remarkably faithful to the arcade original while adding significant exclusive content. This version introduces "The Duel" mode, a series of increasingly difficult survival arenas, and expands the main quest with an additional final stage leading to a true showdown with Death Bringer, the mastermind behind Death Adder. While the graphics have a slightly lower color palette than the arcade, the gameplay is arcade-perfect, including the fluid two-player cooperative mode. The FM synthesis music remains iconic, and the addition of a proper ending sequence made it feel like a complete home experience. It is widely considered the definitive way to play the game outside of the arcade cabinet.
