Pengo is a maze action-puzzle game that puts you in control of a plucky red penguin defending his icy home. Developed by Coreland and published by SEGA in arcades in 1982, the game tasks you with eliminating the blob-like Sno-Bees that have invaded the ice field . You navigate a grid of ice blocks, and by pressing the button while facing a block, you can kick it across the playfield. If a block slides into a Sno-Bee, it crushes it instantly; crushing multiple Sno-Bees with one block awards bonus points . Three diamond blocks are indestructible—lining them up horizontally or vertically stuns all Sno-Bees and grants a massive score bonus. You can also push against a wall to make it vibrate, temporarily freezing any Sno-Bees touching it. Each round begins with flashing ice blocks containing eggs that will hatch into new Sno-Bees as the round progresses.
Game Gear
Released by SEGA on October 6, 1990 exclusively in Europe and Japan, Pengo arrived as one of the early titles for the newly launched handheld console, nearly six years after the Atari 2600 port . The Game Gear version features 64 unique levels with infinite replayability, stored on a 256Kb cartridge using 32KB of ROM . The core gameplay remains faithful to the arcade original—pushing ice blocks to crush enemies and lining up diamond blocks for bonuses—while adapting the controls to the console's directional pad and action button. Pengo is presented in full colour on the handheld's backlit LCD screen . The iconic theme music, Gershon Kingsley's electronic instrumental "Popcorn", is preserved in this version, contributing to its playful atmosphere . A straightforward yet faithful arcade conversion for SEGA's first handheld.
