Pengo is a maze action-puzzle game that puts you in control of a plucky red penguin defending his icy home. Developed by Coreland and published by SEGA in arcades in 1982, the game tasks you with eliminating the blob-like Sno-Bees that have invaded the ice field . You navigate a grid of ice blocks, and by pressing the fire button while facing a block, you can kick it across the playfield . If a block slides into a Sno-Bee, it crushes it instantly; crushing multiple Sno-Bees with one block awards bonus points . Three diamond blocks are indestructible—lining them up horizontally or vertically stuns all Sno-Bees and grants a massive 5,000 to 10,000 point bonus . You can also push against a wall to make it vibrate, temporarily freezing any Sno-Bees touching it so you can run them over . Each round begins with flashing ice blocks containing eggs that will hatch into new Sno-Bees as the round progresses .

Atari 2600

Released in March 1984 by Atari Corporation, this port arrived during the final years of the 2600's commercial life . Due to hardware limitations, the playfield is smaller than the arcade original, but most gameplay elements remain intact . Only three Sno-Bees appear on screen at once, and they move slower and less aggressively, making the game easier overall . The iconic "Popcorn" theme was replaced with a short, looping five-second melody on the 2600's sound hardware . The game supports one or two players alternating turns, with the left difficulty switch toggling the theme song on or off . Bonus screens show your completion time, and time bonuses reward finishing rounds quickly . While not as frantic as the arcade original, this remains a solid and playable conversion for the aging console.
