Earthworm Jim - DOS game screenshot (1995) by Activision

Earthworm Jim is a run-and-gun platformer where an ordinary earthworm becomes a intergalactic hero after a cosmic suit falls from the sky. Navigate surreal levels using Jim's plasma gun and whip-like head to rescue Princess What's-Her-Name from evil forces. Battle outrageous bosses including Psy-Crow, Queen Slug-for-a-Butt, Evil the Cat, and Major Mucus. Between stages, race through "Andy Asteroids" mini-games dodging obstacles against Psy-Crow. Stylish humor, responsive controls, and imaginative level design make this game a cult classic.

DOS

Released in 1996 by Interplay as part of "Earthworm Jim 1 & 2: The Whole Can O' Worms" bundle alongside Earthworm Jim 2, this version was developed by Rainbow Arts. The DOS conversion lacks Special Edition content—notably missing the "Intestinal Distress" and "Big Bruty" levels plus bonus sections. Graphics feature redrawn artwork adapted for PC hardware. Controls maintain console responsiveness, translating well to joystick or keyboard input. The core platforming and humor survive the transition despite less vibrant presentation than 16-bit originals. An accessible DOS port demonstrating that early PC versions of console hits could achieve quality results when properly executed.
