Volfied is an action-puzzle game developed by Taito, originally released in arcades in 1989 as a successor to Qix. You pilot the spaceship Monotros, returning to your home planet Volfied after receiving an SOS call to save it from alien invaders. The goal is to clear 80% or more of each playfield by using a laser cutter to draw lines and carve out sections, gradually revealing a picture in the cleared areas. While moving along the outer border, your ship is protected by a shield that depletes over time. When you initiate cutting, the shield becomes inactive and touching any enemy is fatal. Each level contains power-up blocks that grant speed boosts, time freezes, or instant enemy elimination.
DOS
Released in 1991 by Empire Software for IBM PC compatibles. This version preserves the core gameplay, power-ups, and two-player alternating mode. Graphics are displayed in VGA with 256 colours, offering vibrant and detailed visuals that compare favourably to the arcade original. The soundtrack supports various sound cards including AdLib and Sound Blaster. Controls are responsive using keyboard, joystick, or mouse. Performance is smooth on most systems, though faster CPUs may cause the game to run too quickly without appropriate speed management. Critical reception was positive, with reviewers praising the faithful conversion and colourful graphics. The DOS version is considered one of the better home ports of Volfied, alongside the Amiga version. It requires DOS and works well under emulation for modern systems.
