Volfied is an action-puzzle game developed by Taito, originally released in arcades in 1989 as a successor to Qix. You pilot the spaceship Monotros, returning to your home planet Volfied after receiving an SOS call to save it from alien invaders. The goal is to clear 80% or more of each playfield by using a laser cutter to draw lines and carve out sections, gradually revealing a picture in the cleared areas. While moving along the outer border, your ship is protected by a shield that depletes over time. When you initiate cutting, the shield becomes inactive and touching any enemy is fatal. Each level contains power-up blocks that grant speed boosts, time freezes, or instant enemy elimination.

PC Engine

Released on 27 December 1989 by Taito for the PC Engine via HuCard, making it one of the earliest home conversions of the arcade original. The PC Engine version features colourful graphics with detailed backgrounds and smooth scrolling. The game includes 40 levels, each with unique environments and enemy patterns. While the backgrounds are average compared to the arcade, the playability is excellent. A notable omission is the lack of in-game music during levels, with only sound effects accompanying gameplay. The Famitsu Cross Review awarded it a score of 30/40, inducting it into the Silver Hall of Fame. The game was later re-released on the Wii Virtual Console in 2008. Critical reception was generally positive, with reviewers recommending it for fans of clever non-shooting action games, though some noted the increasing difficulty beyond level 6 or 7 becomes frustrating.
