Beyond Castle Wolfenstein

Commodore 64

Beyond Castle Wolfenstein is a stealth action game set in World War II, the sequel to Castle Wolfenstein. You play an Allied agent who has escaped Castle Wolfenstein and must infiltrate Hitler's secret Berlin bunker, retrieve a bomb smuggled inside, plant it outside the Führer's conference room door, and escape. The game features a top-down view with characters seen upright. You must sneak past or silently eliminate stormtroopers using a dagger. Guards use a pass system—different for each floor—requiring you to show the correct pass or offer a bribe. Failure twice triggers a bunker-wide alarm. Dead bodies can be dragged to conceal them or block passages.

Released in July 1984 by Muse Software, developed by Silas Warner, Eric Ace, and Frank Svoboda III. The C64 version came on a single 5.25-inch floppy disk and supports joystick, paddles, or keyboard controls, though keyboard is needed for all commands. It features digitalized German speech—"Achtung!," "Halt!," "Heil!"—a rarity for home computers of the era, along with improved sound effects. The dagger for silent kills influenced later stealth games like Metal Gear and Hitman. The game includes random bunker layouts and randomized passes to extend replayability. This was the last Wolfenstein title released by Muse Software before the company filed for Chapter 7 bankruptcy in 1987.
