Klax is an arcade puzzle game designed by Dave Akers and Mark Stephen Pierce, released by Atari Games in 1990 as a spiritual follow-up to Tetris . The playing field is a 5x5 grid viewed in 3D perspective. Colored tiles roll down a conveyor belt towards a paddle at the bottom, which you move to catch them . You can drop tiles into any column or use the "throw" mechanic to launch a tile back onto the belt . The goal is to create "Klaxes": lines of three or more matching tiles horizontally, vertically, or diagonally . Each wave presents a specific objective, such as making diagonals, catching a certain number of tiles, or reaching a point total . The game includes 100 levels in total, with the final wave requiring 250,000 points .

Released in February 1990 by Atari Games, developed by Dave Akers (software) and Mark Stephen Pierce (design/animation) . Runs on a Motorola 68000 CPU at 7.16 MHz with an OKI6295 sound chip , displaying 512 colors at 336x240 resolution . The arcade version features a female voice announcing each level and celebrating successful moves, plus crowd applause when completing a wave . Each tile color produces a distinct sound as it rolls, a detail preserved in only a few home conversions . The two-player mode uses split-screen, with players competing separately . Unlimited continues are available by inserting coins . A unique attract mode feature shows Klax t-shirt advertising .
