Warlock - The Avenger

Amiga

Warlock: The Avenger is a fantasy action game and a direct sequel to the classic 8-bit title Druid, continuing the series' signature Gauntlet-style hack-and-slash gameplay. The game is set in the dangerous underworld of Belorn, where the evil lord Acamantor has stolen the precious jewel known as the Karna. Players control a powerful warlock on a quest to recover the jewel and defeat the forces of darkness. The journey takes place across eight increasingly difficult maze-like dungeons filled with ghouls, goblins, and gargoyles. The warlock is armed with a scepter to dispatch enemies and can collect various spells and items for assistance. As a bonus, the Amiga version includes a full conversion of its predecessor, Druid, offering two distinct adventures in one package.

Released in 1990 by Millennium Interactive, Warlock: The Avenger was designed to showcase 16-bit hardware with vibrant, detailed graphics far superior to its 8-bit origins. The game offers fast-paced action and tricky maze designs, yet received mixed reviews for feeling too similar to Druid—more an expansion than a true sequel. Critics also pointed out a cumbersome interface, including an unskippable intro sequence that frustrated players given the high difficulty. Despite this, the inclusion of the original Druid as a bonus and the variety of spells made it a decent addition to the Amiga library, with contemporary scores ranging from 42% to 80%.
