Turrican

ZX Spectrum

Turrican is a sci-fi action platformer where you control a bio-engineered cyborg warrior on a mission to reclaim the lost colony of Alterra from the three-headed artificial intelligence M.O.R.G.U.L. Journey through five vast worlds filled with exploring opportunities and secret rooms. Equip yourself with multiple weapons and utilize a unique transforming ability into a spinning buzz-saw. Battle hostile robotic creatures, uncover hidden power-ups and extra lives, and face massive end-level bosses. Unlike many action games of its time, Turrican doesn't force linear progression—instead it rewards exploration, allowing players to discover secrets and hidden bonus areas throughout each expansive level.

ZX Spectrum

Released in 1990 by Rainbow Arts and ported by Probe Software, Turrican brought the sci-fi action to Sinclair's 8-bit computer. The Spectrum version showcases impressive scale with enormous levels demonstrating technical prowess for the 48K machine. While lacking the 16-bit and C64 versions' excellent soundtracks, the Spectrum conversion compensates with metallic and biomechanical visual aesthetics that proved influential and widely copied. The rotating weapon concept—firing like a wand around the player—was genuinely clever. Though enemies can feel unavoidable due to screen limitations, the game remains engaging and fun. Voted number 36 in Your Sinclair Readers' Top 100 Games of All Time, it stands as a notable achievement that brought contemporary arcade action to home computers.
