Lotus Esprit Turbo Challenge

ZX Spectrum

Lotus Esprit Turbo Challenge is a high-speed racing game developed by Magnetic Fields and published by Gremlin Graphics in 1990. You drive the iconic Lotus Esprit Turbo SE through 32 tracks across three difficulty series, racing against 20 opponents with pun names like "Ayrton Sendup". The game features hills and hollows that affect your speed, sharp corners indicated by roadside signs, and hazards such as oil slicks, roadblocks, and puddles. Fuel management is crucial—you must make pit stops to refuel. The unique "reverse grid" system starts you at the back if you finished well, keeping every race competitive. A two-player split-screen mode is available.

Converted by Ali Davidson with graphics by Berni, this version shares its core code with the Amstrad CPC port . It reduces the number of tracks and opponents, with a significantly lower framerate that requires more anticipation when steering . The playable area occupies a small window on screen, and roadside details are simplified. Music is available only on 128K machines, featuring selectable tracks during races . The collision detection is slightly more forgiving than the 16-bit versions, though AI opponents on the first four places are very difficult to pass . The tracks themselves differ from the original, with hills and steep turns appearing even on the easiest course, increasing overall difficulty . Despite technical compromises, the ZX Spectrum version was voted number 17 in Your Sinclair magazine's Readers' Top 100 Games of All Time . The two-player mode remains highly enjoyable and faithful to the original formula.
