Strider

ZX Spectrum

Strider is a fast-paced hack-and-slash platformer set in a dystopian future where the mysterious Grandmaster Meio has seized control of the Earth from a space station. You take control of Hiryu, the youngest and most skilled member of an elite group of high-tech ninjas known as "Striders." Armed with a plasma-charged blade called Cypher, Hiryu must infiltrate the capital of the Kazakh Soviet Socialist Republic. The gameplay is defined by incredible mobility; Hiryu can climb walls, ceilings, and steep inclines with ease. Across five massive levels, you face a variety of enemies, ranging from cybernetic soldiers to a giant mechanical gorilla and a serpentine robot formed by a legislative committee.

ZX Spectrum

Released in 1989 by Tiertex and published by US Gold, the ZX Spectrum version is a masterpiece of 8-bit programming. Despite the Sinclair machine's hardware limitations, the developers managed to keep the sprites large and the action remarkably fluid. To avoid the infamous "attribute clash" of the Spectrum, the game uses monochromatic sprites against detailed backgrounds, ensuring that the fast-paced movement remains clear and responsive. It successfully includes almost all the iconic set pieces from the arcade original, including the dramatic hang-glider entrance and the boss fight against the mechanical gorilla. Critically acclaimed upon release, it received a "Crash Smash" from CRASH magazine and a 92% score from Your Sinclair, with reviewers stunned by how much of the 16-bit arcade experience was preserved in just 48K or 128K of RAM. It remains one of the most celebrated arcade conversions in the Spectrum's extensive library.
