3D-Pinball

ZX Spectrum

3D Pinball is a pinball simulation where players aim to achieve the highest score by hitting various targets on a single, well-designed table. The classic arcade experience features bumpers, bonus ramps, and multiple targets including a black hole, revolver lines, tombstone targets, and sidebar lights. With five balls per game, players must strategically control the flippers to keep the ball in play and trigger different scoring sequences and bonus opportunities.

ZX Spectrum

Released in 1989 by Mastertronic Plus, 3D Pinball delivered an impressive pinball experience on the Spectrum's 48K platform. The tilted perspective created a convincing 3D illusion that gave the single table clarity and charm rarely seen on the system. The bright yellow table with its distinctive color scheme made excellent use of the Spectrum's limitations, avoiding excessive color clashing through thoughtful design. Q and P keys controlled the flippers with responsive gameplay, while simplistic but well-suited sound effects accompanied bumpers and switches. The absence of a TILT feature meant pure pinball action without penalties. Though lacking the technical bells and whistles of other versions, the Spectrum edition demonstrated smart programming and clean visual presentation. As a budget release, it provided an addictive high-score experience and remains a nicely-crafted showcase of what the format could achieve.
