Captain Blood

ZX Spectrum

Captain Blood is a surreal sci-fi adventure designed by Philippe Ulrich and Didier Bouchon, developed by ERE Informatique in 1988. You play Bob Morlock, a video game designer trapped inside his own creation as Captain Blood. After a hyperspace accident, he is cloned 30 times, each duplicate draining his "vital fluids". For 800 years he has destroyed 25 clones, but five remain hidden across the galaxy of Hydra. You start on the bridge of the Ark, a giant biomechanical ship. To find clones, you launch an OORXX probe down fractal valleys to meet aliens. Communication uses the UPCOM system, an icon-based language of 150 symbols. The title track is adapted from Jean-Michel Jarre's "Ethnicolor".

ZX Spectrum

Released in 1989 by Infogrames in the UK , this version was converted by Imagitec Design Ltd . Crash magazine gave 76% overall, noting the game's "feel has been perfectly translated" from the Atari ST original despite some graphical compromises . The Spectrum version features the complete UPCOM icon communication system and the wireframe fractal valley landing sequences . 128K models include the Jean-Michel Jarre title tune via the AY chip . Controls support Kempston, Cursor, and Sinclair joysticks. Critics noted the icon system is initially off-putting with over 150 symbols (including one representing bananas), but praised the unique atmosphere when played in the dark . A complex, innovative, and demanding cult classic for Spectrum owners.
