Dynamite Dux

ZX Spectrum

Dynamite Düx is a side-scrolling beat 'em up developed by Sega AM2, released for arcades in 1988. Unlike the dark, gritty tone of contemporary brawlers, it features a light-hearted, cartoonish Tex Avery-inspired aesthetic. You control two pet ducks, the blue Bin and the red Pin, who must battle through six stages to rescue a girl named Lucy from the evil sorcerer Achacha. Gameplay uses two buttons (jump and attack) and allows fighting in all directions. You can punch, throw enemies, and pick up weapons including bombs, bazookas, rocks, and water pistols. Food restores health, and bonus boxing rounds appear after stages 2 and 4. The arcade supports two-player simultaneous co-op.

ZX Spectrum

Released in 1989 by Sega, converted by Core Design. Available on cassette for 48K and 128K models. The six-level structure is preserved (Downtown, Japan, Chicago, Texas, Jungle, Achacha's lair), along with weapons and food pickups. The 128K model features enhanced AY sound chip music, while the 48K version uses beeper effects. The two-player co-op mode from the arcade is completely absent—single-player only. Graphics are colorful but heavily compromised due to the Spectrum's color clash limitations, with small, blocky sprites and a reduced play area. The bonus boxing rounds are missing. Magazine reviews were lukewarm: Sinclair User had previously awarded the arcade original "Most Original Game of the Year" for 1988, but the Spectrum conversion received lower marks—Crash rated it 70%. User comments note the uncontrollable jumping mechanic and jerky animation. A functional but heavily compromised conversion, playable only for die-hard fans of the original.
