Fernandez Must Die

ZX Spectrum

Fernandez Must Die is a vertically scrolling military shooter set in the Republic of El Diablo, where you must liberate the country from the dictator Fernandez by destroying all eight of his bases . The gameplay follows the Commando formula: you control a soldier who can move and shoot in all eight directions with unlimited machine gun ammo and limited grenades . You can commandeer abandoned jeeps, motorbikes, and tanks, each armed with a cannon and its own damage resistance, and run over enemy infantry . The main battlefield scrolls vertically in both directions. Side doors lead to underground bunker mazes where you free prisoners-of-war (900 points each) and recover stolen gold . Pressing Run/Stop calls up a map of the entire territory . Two-player co-op is supported, with split driving/gunning duties when both share a single jeep .

ZX Spectrum

Released in 1988 by Image Works, developed by Probe Software, requiring 48KB RAM . The Spectrum version features the top-down perpendicular view with eight bases to conquer, connected via underground tunnels inside buildings . You start in a jeep and can also use motorbikes and tanks—losing a life destroys the vehicle . Grenades are required to blow open side doors to access buildings where prisoners and gold are hidden . Two-player simultaneous co-op is supported; if both share a jeep, one drives while the other controls the independently aimable gun . A unique feature lets you always restart from the point you died in the last game . Spanish magazine Microhobby rated Graphics 70%, Movement 70%, Sound 60%, Difficulty 90%, and Addiction 80% . A faithful Commando-style shooter for Spectrum owners.
