1943: The Battle of Midway is a vertically scrolling shooter and the sequel to Capcom's *1942*. Set in the Pacific theater of WWII, you pilot a P-38 Lightning across 16 stages to destroy the Japanese air fleet and ultimately sink the battleship Yamato. The game introduces a refillable energy meter that serves as your life bar—taking hits or performing special attacks drains it, while power-ups replenish it. Weapons include machine gun, three-way gun, shotgun, and piercing laser. Special attacks (Lightning, Tsunami, Cyclone) cost energy but clear enemies or bullets. Destroying full formations of red planes yields power-ups. The arcade original supports simultaneous two-player co-op.

Released in 1988 by Go! (U.S. Gold), published under license from Capcom . Available on cassette for 48K and 128K models . The conversion features a gameplay area shown in only two colors—pushing the Spectrum's palette to its limits . Despite this monochrome limitation, sprites move quite fast on screen and scrolling does not suffer much during gameplay, unlike the sluggish Amstrad CPC version . The 128K model features enhanced AY sound chip music . Sound effects are present but no in-game music . Magazine scores include 6/10 from C+VG, 428 from ACE, and 47% from The Games Machine . A functional if visually stripped conversion of the arcade classic.
