Savage

ZX Spectrum

Savage is an ambitious three-part action epic where you play as Savage, a muscular warrior imprisoned in a castle who discovers his imprisonment was a trap designed to capture his beloved maiden. Across three wildly different gameplay styles, progress through the castle to rescue her. The first part features horizontal-scrolling combat where you use shot trajectories to defeat enemies and collect treasures and improved weapons. The second transforms into a first-person 3D perspective resembling Space Harrier, shooting skulls while avoiding monoliths. The third section shifts to an aerial eagle-form perspective with platform-style levels, timing-based hazards, and bubble power-ups. Each section requires earning a completion code to access additional lives on subsequent levels.

Released in 1988 by Probe Software and published by Firebird Software, Savage showcased ambitious multi-genre design. Programming by David Perry, with graphics by Nick Bruty and additional Spectrum artwork by Alan Tomkins, the game pushed the system's capabilities with detailed sprite animation and varied visual styles. Music by Jason C. Brooke and David Shea complemented the action with memorable compositions. Your Sinclair awarded the game 9 out of 10, praising the detailed and colorful graphics achieved within the Spectrum's technical limitations. The game received a "Megagame" award recognition and a "C+VG Hit" status at Computer & Video Games. The three-part structure showcased how creatively different gameplay genres could be incorporated into a single cartridge, establishing Savage as an essential showcase of what determined developers could accomplish on 8-bit hardware.
