Slug

ZX Spectrum

Slug is a platform game with a bizarre and humorous premise. Picture the scene: it’s Friday night, 11 PM. Slug and his sweetheart are settling down to watch the Friday Nite Horror Movie when a huge mechanical hand reaches down and snatches his beloved away. Determined to rescue her, Slug discovers she has been taken to a strange land where monstrous creatures roam—snails, turtles, snakes, blobs on legs, and even sheep on springs. To guarantee her release, you must collect a set number of hearts on each screen, with the required total increasing as you progress. You must also watch out for bombs that count down from 9 to 0 before exploding, but you can defuse them simply by running into them. Your only weapon is T.N.T.S. (Tri-Nitro-Toluene Slime), which destroys creatures on contact.

Released in 1988 by Alternative Software Ltd. and developed by Deep Thought Software, this version was authored by Darren Melbourne, Denis Hickie, and Keith A. Goodyer . The game supports both Sinclair and Kempston joysticks, giving players flexible control options . Unlike many Spectrum games of the era that used attribute-clash-heavy colour, Slug focuses on detailed monochrome sprites to maintain smooth platforming action. The game is also known by the alternate title Ooie Gooie .
