Temple of Terror is a fantasy graphic adventure based on Ian Livingstone's Fighting Fantasy gamebook #14 . You are a solitary adventurer chosen by the sage Yaztromo to save Allansia from Malbordus, champion of the Dark Elves . You must travel through the Desert of Skulls to the lost city of Vatos, braving monsters, deathtraps, cult disciples, and the killer known as the Messenger of Death . Your goal is to recover the powerful Dragon artefacts before Malbordus can fuel his campaign of carnage . Armed with a spellbook containing "sleep", "dart", "incendiary" and "shrinking", you must overcome puzzles across the wasteland . This hybrid merges the gamebook's Choose-Your-Own-Adventure design with a text-graphic model .
ZX Spectrum
Released in 1987 by U.S. Gold, developed by Adventure Soft UK (Simon and Michael Woodroffe) with graphics by Teoman Irmak and cover art by Chris Achilléos . The Spectrum version comes on a double-sided tape: Side 1 features the full illustrated version with static location graphics, while Side 2 offers a text-only version . The game features a "BOM" (Back One Move) command allowing players to undo a single fatal move, plus a save function at any point . Like its Commodore 64 counterpart, the Spectrum version contains the same fatal bug that prevents game completion—variable $C is used both for flagging pirates falling from a bridge and counting items inserted into a locked door, causing the door to never open . Additional issues include typos in on-screen text (e.g., "alter" instead of "altar", "terodactyl" instead of "pterodactyl") and non-functional shortcut commands like "I" for inventory . Contemporary reviews included a "Crash Smash" award from Crash magazine .
