Last Mission

ZX Spectrum

Last Mission is a top-down multidirectional shooter developed by Data East and released in arcades in 1986 . You assume the role of an alien-humanoid space pilot exiled from your home galaxy for committing an unlearned crime. The only way to return and restore your honor is to invade and defeat the alien forces who torment your people. Armed with the Main Fighter, you scroll in eight directions across a planet surface, destroying enemies while avoiding tanks, crab-shaped creatures, and floating orbs. Destroying certain objects yields weapon power-ups and force fields that grant temporary invincibility. The ultimate goal is to wipe out all aliens in each wave, then destroy a large mothership-like camera to advance.

ZX Spectrum

Released in 1987 by U.S. Gold, one year after the Commodore 64 original . The Spectrum version was published as a cassette release and features music by David Whittaker, who also composed the C64 soundtrack . Critical reception was mixed—German magazine Aktueller Software Markt awarded 70%, while The Games Machine (UK) gave 55% . Reviewers noted that while the core multidirectional shooting gameplay remained intact, the Spectrum conversion suffered from compromises compared to the arcade original and the C64 version. The game supports both one-player and two-player modes, with joystick or keyboard controls. Despite its technical limitations on the Spectrum hardware, Last Mission remains a playable example of mid-1980s arcade conversions on the platform.
