Killer Ring

ZX Spectrum

Killer Ring is a vertically fixed shooter developed by The Byte Engineers and published by Reaktör Software in 1987. The idea is simple: shoot anything that moves—and if it doesn't move, shoot it anyway. You control a ring-shaped ship at the bottom of the screen, defending against waves of alien attackers. After shooting waves of enemies, you must breach a rotating shield and destroy the alien leader by hitting its red heart. Levels feature floating bats, flying saucers dropping bombs, rotating spheroids with protective gaps, and moons spawning magenta bats. Each playthrough increases difficulty. Hard mode requires blasting through an anti-matter beam before shots can penetrate.

ZX Spectrum

Released in 1987 by Reaktor, developed by Edgar Belka with music by Ben Daglish . Spectacularly colourful explosion effects dominate the screen, though the monochrome visuals make it difficult to see when enemies fire at you . The game supports Sinclair, Kempston, and Protek joysticks, plus keyboard controls (5-left, 8-right, 6-down, 7-up, SPACE-fire) . Seven attack waves are available; after completing wave seven, the game loops with higher scores as the only reward . The 128K version features AY sound chip music in the menu. The difficulty is decently challenging, though the graphics were considered outdated even for 1987 . The manual humorously includes a cupcake recipe by Mark Easton, adding a quirky touch to the package .
