Knight Rider is an action-driving game based on the popular 1980s television series. You control Michael Knight and his artificially intelligent supercar KITT, who must uncover a terrorist plot threatening to trigger World War III by disrupting key East-West diplomatic meetings. Missions include preventing attacks at the Democratic Convention, the U.N. Conference, the Trades Conference, and the Presidential Dinner. Gameplay alternates between two sections: first-person driving sequences where you travel between cities while waves of enemy helicopters fire missiles, and top-down stealth sections where Michael navigates rooms filled with crates and patrolling guards to collect clues. During driving, you can choose to control steering while KITT handles shooting, or let KITT drive while you aim the crosshairs. Slower driving improves accuracy but consumes precious mission time.
ZX Spectrum
Released in 1986 by Ocean Software for the ZX Spectrum on cassette, following an extensive advertising campaign lasting over sixteen months . The Spectrum version was programmed by Gary Knight and Antony R. Lill, with loading screen artwork by F. David Thorpe . It preserves the five selectable missions, first-person driving sequences with dashboard instrumentation, and overhead building infiltration sections . The Spectrum port received uniformly negative reviews upon release. Crash magazine awarded 39%, Sinclair User was highly critical, and Your Sinclair gave 4/10 . Critics described the driving sections as tedious with uninteresting graphics, noting that enemy helicopters resembled "giant locusts" and that KITT is virtually impervious to damage, allowing players to complete missions while doing other tasks .
