Fantastic Voyage

ZX Spectrum

Fantastic Voyage is a maze-based adventure based on the 1966 sci-fi film. You have been miniaturized and injected into an injured scientist's body to save his life. Your mission is to locate and assemble eight pieces of a submarine scattered throughout the anatomy, then bring them to the brain for assembly before escaping. The human body is a 70-room interconnected maze, each screen labelled with its location (lungs, arteries, intestines, etc.). You have a laser to defend against viruses and cholesterol deposits, but energy drains constantly—replenished by collecting red blood cells. Infections break out periodically; if not neutralised quickly, the host dies. White blood cells must be carried to blockages.

Released in May 1984 by Quicksilva, developed by John R. Edmonds with art by Steinar Lund . Officially licensed from 20th Century Fox, based on Edmonds' earlier unlicensed concept Blood 'n' Guts . Crash magazine noted graphics are "well sized and smooth" with "very good" use of colour, though the "fairly simple graphics" lack lasting appeal . Sinclair User praised the "addictive and original" entertainment, calling graphics "adequate and mercifully abstract" . The body diagram on screen shows your real-time position, with infections indicated by a flashing red square . A gravity effect requires pressing Swim to rise, while you naturally sink when releasing . Energy management is critical—running low turns you red before becoming invisible . Viruses appear after assembling the first submarine part . Sound features a toggleable continuous tune, though one reviewer called the music "horrible" . While repetitive after extended play, Fantastic Voyage remains an original, educational, and challenging arcade adventure.
