Boulder Dash II

ZX Spectrum

Boulder Dash II is a 2D maze-puzzle game designed by Peter Liepa and released in 1985 as the first sequel to the original Boulder Dash. You again control Rockford, a dwarf miner digging through underground caves to collect jewels while avoiding falling boulders, fireflies, butterflies, and growing amoebas. The game introduces two new elements: slime and enchanted walls. There are 16 main caves labelled A through P, plus four playable intermissions. Each cave has five difficulty levels, with higher levels requiring more jewels and offering less time. The objective in each cave is to collect a specified number of jewels, which reveals an escape tunnel to the next level.

Published by Prism Leisure Corporation in 1985 for the 48K Spectrum, in agreement with First Star Software . In the UK, Boulder Dash II first appeared as part of the compilation Rockford's Riot + Boulder Dash (Monolith) before being sold as a standalone title . This version features an authentic translation of Peter Liepa's sixteen new sequel levels with responsive controls . A known technical limitation is that the game uses slower scrolling than other versions, which can occasionally cause Rockford to run off the visible screen area as the display struggles to keep up with his movement . The game supports both one-player and two-player alternating modes, with controls compatible with Kempston, Interface 2, and cursor joysticks . Some levels are very difficult while others become manageable once the correct strategy is discovered .
