The Helm is a text adventure set in a fantasy world where the Helm of Immortality has been stolen by an evil Lich who keeps it deep within his castle, corrupted and incomplete. Many adventurers have tried to retrieve it for the reward of immortality, and all have failed. You are one such adventurer determined to enter the castle and defeat the Lich. Your quest begins in the surrounding area outside the castle, where you must explore to find useful objects and defeat monsters and creatures along the way. The game uses a two-word parser, requiring simple commands like "Tie rope" to interact with locations. A distinctive feature is the computer's sycophantic and humorous responses, addressing you as "sylph-like cosmic being" or "your absolute brillianceness," while cheekily criticising inputs it does not understand.

Released in 1985 by Firebird Software, The Helm was created using Gilsoft's The Quill adventure creation system, a popular tool for text adventures on the Spectrum . The game features coloured text but no graphics, relying entirely on descriptive text. Contemporary reviews noted the unnecessarily extensive colour palette used, as well as overly verbose responses for common commands like "you can't do that". Despite these criticisms, the game presents interesting puzzles and strong humour, which were well appreciated at the time .
