HERO

ZX Spectrum

H.E.R.O. (Helicopter Emergency Rescue Operation) is a fixed-screen platform game designed by John Van Ryzin and published by Activision in 1984 . Volcanic activity on Mount Leone has trapped numerous miners. You control Roderick Hero, equipped with a backpack helicopter for flight and hovering, a helmet laser, and six sticks of dynamite per level . Each stage is a maze of vertical shafts and horizontal tunnels leading to the trapped miner. Backpack energy depletes gradually. Use the laser to kill enemies (spiders, bats, snakes) or slowly remove walls; dynamite is essential for quickly removing obstacles and lava flows . Later levels introduce intermittent magma walls, flooded sections, and destructible lanterns that leave sections dark.

Published in 1984 for 48K machines by Activision, converted by Software Conversions Ltd . The Spectrum version received a 75% overall rating from Crash magazine, which called it "highly original, addictive and fun" despite being "a bit pricey" at £7.95 . Graphics were described as "simple but effective, smooth moving" with "good, bright and lively" use of colour . Critics noted the thrust control has a noticeable delay—"his thrust is a bit slow to come on"—which can leave you in awkward situations but was perhaps intended as realistic . The game supports level entry at 5, 9, 13 or 17 for skilled players. After level 17, mines become randomly generated, preventing mastery . Your Spectrum gave mixed reviews (2/5, 1/5), criticising the "plain blocky graphics" and tricky backpack control . A faithful conversion of a classic, retaining all core mechanics but visually plain.
