VIC Rescue is a one-player arcade game where your mission is to rescue six stranded people from an alien planet and return them to the orbital station. The station moves slowly across the top of the screen, and you must choose the correct moment to release your landing module. Sneak through horizontally moving asteroids to land on one of two flat pads below, which shrink with each use. You have limited fuel to slow your descent, managed across all six rescue attempts. After loading a victim, return to the station while asteroids become enemy ships you can shoot. The sequence repeats until all rescues are complete or you lose three ships. The game tests timing, precision, and resource management under pressure.
VIC-20
Released in 1982 by Interceptor Software on cassette tape, VIC Rescue runs on the unexpanded VIC-20. This port adapts the rescue-and-return shooter within the system's base limits. The orbital station and landing pads are rendered with blocky but recognizable sprites. The asteroid field and enemy ships are clearly distinguished, with visual cues for shrinking pads. Sound uses the single audio channel for engine hums and shooting effects. Performance remains stable with no slowdown. Interceptor delivered an engaging shooter combining rescue mechanics with space combat. The game remains a nostalgic favorite for VIC-20 enthusiasts, demonstrating the system's capacity for varied shooters. Its legacy is a solid, enjoyable rescue mission game for the Commodore VIC-20.
