The Smurfs Travel the World

SNES

The Smurfs Travel the World is a 2D side-scrolling platformer developed by Virtual Studio and published by Infogrames. Inquisitive Smurf brings Smurfette to Papa Smurf's laboratory to see the Magic Crystal, but Smurfette accidentally breaks it, and the two are teleported away. Now they must collect ten shards scattered across each level to return home. You can choose between Inquisitive Smurf and Smurfette. Gameplay emphasises exploration: enemies can be avoided or kicked. Shards are often hidden, requiring interaction with ropes or vines. The health system uses four hearts, and losing all lives sends you back to the title screen with no continues.

Released exclusively in Europe in 1996, this PAL version was never released in North America or Japan. Contemporary critical reception was mixed. Reviewers praised the impressive art style, noting colorful, detailed backgrounds are "a sight to behold," particularly the parallax scrolling jungle and raging river. The visuals remain true to the animated series. However, significant criticism targeted "laggy" controls with input delay, forcing players to jump early. The "find-all-shards" gameplay was panned as frustrating and samey, with obtuse puzzles. The in-game music was harshly criticized as annoying, despite teasing the classic cartoon theme during the opening. The game is considered entertaining for younger players and Smurfs fans, with creative global settings, but it does not match genre greats like Donkey Kong Country.
