Asterix and Obelix is a side-scrolling platform action game developed by Infogrames and Bit Managers, released in 1995. Based on the famous French comic series by René Goscinny and Albert Uderzo, the game is set around 50 BC in a Gaulish village that resists Roman occupation. To prove to Caesar that they can go wherever they please, Asterix and Obelix embark on a journey across the Roman Empire to bring back souvenirs. The player can control either Asterix or Obelix, with two-player simultaneous support. Locations include Britannia, Helvetia, Greece, Egypt, and Hispania. Gameplay involves running, jumping, and punching Roman legionnaires, along with bonus levels such as a rugby match and the Olympic Games. A password system saves progress.
SNES
Released in Europe in September 1995, the SNES version was co-developed by Bit Managers and published by Infogrames . The graphics are colorful and detailed, faithfully capturing the artwork of the original comics, with improved visuals over the Game Boy version . The music was composed by Alberto Jose González, whose soundtrack received praise for its quality . The SNES version features a password system presented as a series of four character portraits, allowing players to resume progress from specific levels . Two-player simultaneous co-op is supported, allowing one player to control Asterix and the other Obelix . Unlike the DOS port which relies on FM synthesis for audio, the SNES version utilizes its native sound chip for superior music quality. The game was later reworked for Game Boy Advance in 2002 under the title Asterix & Obelix: Paf! Par Toutatis! .
