Illusion of Gaia is an action-RPG developed by Quintet and published by Enix for the SNES, known in PAL regions as Illusion of Time. You control Will, a young orphan with psychokinetic powers living in the coastal village of South Cape. After meeting a runaway princess named Kara, you are drawn into an epic quest to save the world from an impending disaster brought by a mysterious comet. The game is set in a fantasy reimagining of Earth, featuring real-world locations such as the Great Wall of China, Incan ruins, Angkor Wat, and the Egyptian pyramids. Gameplay blends combat and puzzle-solving similar to The Legend of Zelda. Will can transform into two other forms: Freedan, a dark knight with a powerful sword, and Shadow, an energy being with unique abilities. Defeating all enemies in a room rewards permanent stat bonuses, replacing traditional experience points.

Released in Japan on November 27, 1993, and in North America on September 26, 1994. The game features character designs by manga artist Moto Hagio and scenario writing by novelist Mariko Ohara. The soundtrack was composed by Yasuhiro Kawasaki. Retrospective critical reception is positive. Reviewers praise the smooth, responsive controls, unique transformation mechanic, atmospheric environments, and mature storytelling tackling themes of loss and human nature. The game is often considered part of an unofficial trilogy alongside Soul Blazer and Terranigma. However, common criticisms include extreme linearity (prevents revisiting areas), scarce healing items, a nearly impossible side quest requiring collecting 50 hidden Red Jewels, and a final boss rush with no healing between fights. Despite these flaws, Illusion of Gaia remains a fondly remembered and influential action-RPG of the 16-bit era.
