Drakkhen is an open-world RPG developed by Infogrames. You lead a party of four adventurers—Fighter, Scout, Magician, and Priest—across a mysterious island to stop the dragon lords from conquering the world of men. The game blends two distinct styles: on the overworld, you navigate a pseudo-3D first-person landscape with a real-time day/night cycle and smooth vector scrolling. When entering one of eight castles, the view switches to a 2D side-scrolling adventure where you solve puzzles, collect items, and fight monsters in real-time. Combat is auto-attack based, with limited tactical commands. The game is notorious for its cryptic design, deadly traps, and minimal guidance.

Released in September 1991 by Kemco-Seika, this port features a completely rewritten story that lost much of the original's context, making the plot confusing. The game includes an in-game tutorial and quality-of-life improvements like a warp-to-overworld button and slow health regeneration. However, several spells were cut (23 in computer versions, only 18 in the SNES port), and the Restore spell is missing entirely. Character movement is painfully slow, the automatic combat is frustrating, and equipment (excluding weapons) breaks permanently without visible durability. The 3D overworld engine runs on standard SNES hardware using sprite scaling, but framerate can suffer. Criticized for clunky controls, punishing difficulty, and obtuse design, Drakkhen is a divisive—often hated—cult curiosity best appreciated for its bizarre atmosphere and monster design.
