Burning Rangers is a third-person action game developed by Sonic Team and published by Sega for the Sega Saturn . Set in a futuristic society where fire remains the last great danger to humanity, players control a member of an elite firefighting rescue team called the Burning Rangers . The goal of each mission is to extinguish fires, collect energy crystals, and rescue civilians trapped inside burning buildings . Crystals function similarly to rings in Sonic the Hedgehog: possessing at least one crystal protects the player from death, while being hit scatters them . A unique voice navigation system provides directional audio clues to guide players through corridors . The game features four levels—a power plant, an underwater habitat, a space station, and a zero-gravity spaceship—each ending with a boss battle .

Burning Rangers was released on February 26, 1998 in Japan, on May 28, 1998 in North America, and on June 19, 1998 in Europe . Developed by Yuji Naka (producer), Naoto Ohshima (director), and composers Naofumi Hataya and Fumie Kumatani . The game pushed Saturn hardware to its limits, using a modified Nights engine with advanced lighting and transparent fire effects via the VDP2 chip . The Saturn version features fully explorable 3D environments, jetpack maneuvers including double jumps and backflips, and a random level generator unlocked upon completion . Critical reception praised the innovative voice navigation and soundtrack, but criticized poor collision detection and occasional graphical glitches . Famitsu gave it a score of 32 out of 40 . Among the final Saturn releases, Burning Rangers remains a cult classic and has never been re-released .
