Pocket Fighter, released in arcades as Super Gem Fighter Mini Mix, is a 2D fighting game developed and published by Capcom. The game features beloved Capcom characters reimagined in adorable "super deformed" (chibi) proportions, a style previously used in Super Puzzle Fighter II Turbo. The roster includes pint-sized versions of Ryu, Chun-Li, Akuma, Morrigan, Felicia, and characters from Darkstalkers and Red Earth. Gameplay is simplified compared to traditional Street Fighter titles, using only three attack buttons. Unique mechanics include colored gems that power up special moves when collected, elemental orbs that can be thrown to freeze or petrify opponents, and Flash Combos where characters change into humorous costumes mid-combo, such as Chun-Li transforming into Resident Evil's Jill Valentine.
Sega Saturn
Pocket Fighter was released for the Sega Saturn in Japan on July 9, 1998, and in North America on August 3, 1998. The Saturn version requires the 4MB RAM expansion cartridge to run, ensuring arcade-perfect animation and virtually no loading times. Exclusive to this version is the Character Edit mode, allowing players to modify color palettes and other attributes. Running Battle mode presents a survival challenge against all twelve characters. The North American release retained the Pocket Fighter title rather than the arcade's Super Gem Fighter Mini Mix. The Saturn port features CD-DA audio with 34 tracks, an enhanced soundtrack over the arcade original. Due to Capcom's focus on the Dreamcast, North American production was limited, making the Saturn version collectible today. The game supports two-player versus matches.
