Saturn Bomberman

Sega Saturn

Saturn Bomberman is an action-maze game developed by Hudson Soft, the twelfth installment in the Bomberman series. You control the white bomber on a quest to stop Mr. Meanie and his HigeHige Bandits, who have awakened a sealed monster called Crator from the Crystal Tower. Gameplay follows the classic formula: place bombs to destroy soft blocks, defeat enemies, and reveal power-ups. New features include dinosaur helpers called Tirras that level up as you defeat enemies, providing enhanced abilities. Game modes include Story Mode (single-player or two-player co-op) and the legendary Battle Mode.

Released in Japan on July 19, 1996, Saturn Bomberman is best known for its Battle Mode supporting up to ten human players using two Saturn multitaps, earning a Guinness World Record. The North American version uniquely supports the Sega NetLink modem for online play with up to four players. The game features eight battle arenas, colorful power-ups including Remote Control Bombs, and Tirra dinosaurs offering special abilities like jumping and bomb kicking. Critical reception was generally positive, though some reviewers criticized the ten-player widescreen mode as too zoomed out. IGN praised it, stating "for multi-player matches, nothing beats Bomberman." The game features anime-style cutscenes with voice acting, a first for the series. For Saturn owners and party game fans, Saturn Bomberman remains arguably the finest entry in the entire franchise.
