The Crow: City of Angels is a 1997 third-person action beat-’em-up developed by Gray Matter and published by Acclaim, loosely based on the 1996 film sequel. You play as Ashe Corven, a mechanic murdered alongside his son by a street gang led by Judah. Brought back from the dead by a crow, Ashe seeks revenge on the gang members one by one. Gameplay combines hand-to-hand combat with improvised weapons including pipes, knives, bottles, pool cues, swords, and firearms. Ashe can perform kicks, punches, backflips, and evasive moves. Levels include taverns, ships, piers, graveyards, and tombs. The game uses fixed camera angles that change with each step.
Sega Saturn
The Saturn version of The Crow: City of Angels was released on March 12, 1997. The port uses pre-rendered 3D backgrounds with polygonal character models, often resulting in disproportionate character sizes and sluggish movement described as "wading in mud." The Saturn version suffers from severe control issues, employing tank-style controls similar to Resident Evil that cause Ashe to frequently punch at air while enemies attack from behind. Button inputs often fail to register when needed most. Enemy voice lines are extremely repetitive, with taunts repeated ad nauseam. The game received overwhelmingly negative reviews, with IGN awarding 3/10 and GameSpot giving 3.9/10, calling it a "disaster." For Saturn owners, Die Hard Arcade is strongly recommended as the superior beat-’em-up alternative.
