In the Hunt

In the Hunt is a horizontal scrolling shoot 'em up developed by Irem and originally released in arcades in April 1993. You control the Granvia, a new type of attack submarine, on a mission to stop the evil organization D.A.S. (Dark Anarchy Society) from activating their doomsday device. Unlike traditional shoot 'em ups set in space, the game takes place underwater and on the surface. You can fire three types of torpedoes at underwater enemies and two types of missiles at surface threats. The game features seven levels and allows you to control the scrolling speed, a departure from the forced scrolling typical of the genre. Two-player co-op is supported. The game was created by the same team that would later develop the Metal Slug series.

Sega Saturn

Released in Japan on December 15, 1995, North America on June 4, 1996, and Europe in June 1996, this Saturn version was published by THQ. The game is considered an "arcade perfect" conversion of the original Irem arcade board, with sprites, music, and gameplay recreated faithfully. However, the Saturn port suffers from significant slowdown during heavy action sequences, a compromise from converting the powerful Irem M-92 arcade hardware. Despite this, fans praise the gorgeous pixel art and animations comparable to Metal Slug. The game is notoriously difficult, remaining challenging even on the easiest setting. The Japanese subtitle is "Kaitei Daisensou" (Undersea Great War).
