Hokuto no Ken

Sega Saturn

Hokuto no Ken is a graphic adventure game based on the legendary manga and anime series Fist of the North Star. Set years after the ending of the original manga, the story begins when Lin and Bat are about to be married, but Lin is suddenly kidnapped by a masked warrior named Jado, a disciple of the "Dark Hokuto" martial arts school. Jado uses Hokuto Mumyo Ken, an ancient assassination style that predates Kenshiro's Hokuto Shinken. Kenshiro sets out to rescue Lin and her twin sister Rui from the master Zeno. Gameplay consists of Story Mode (long anime-style cutscenes) and Fighting Mode (menu-driven, turn-based battles). A time bar marks each turn as you choose attacks from a menu.

Sega Saturn

Released exclusively in Japan on December 22, 1995 by Banpresto, this Saturn version features the original anime voice cast including Akira Kamiya as Kenshiro. The story was written with input from original manga creators Buronson and Hara, who considered it an official sequel. Fighting Mode lets you choose from ten major characters. The game is notoriously difficult for non-Japanese speakers as all dialogue is in Japanese with no subtitles. While the animated sequences and voice acting are praised, critics note the lack of attack variety and repetitive gameplay. The game was also ported to PlayStation. This version is recommended only for die-hard Fist of the North Star fans.
