Dragon Ball Z: Shin Butōden is a 2D fighting game developed by TOSE and published by Bandai. The title translates to "Dragon Ball Z: True Fighting Story" and is the fourth and final installment in the Super Butōden series that began on the Super Nintendo. Gameplay follows the classic one-on-one fighting formula, featuring special moves, Ki charging, and the signature split-screen feature that activates when fighters move too far apart. Modes include Story Mode, Versus Mode, Tournament Mode, Group Battle Mode (team of five characters), and the unique Mr. Satan Mode. In Mr. Satan Mode, you place bets on matches and use items like banana peels, guns, and dynamite to cheat and influence outcomes, helping Mr. Satan raise money to pay his debt to Android 18.
Sega Saturn
Released exclusively in Japan on November 17, 1995, this Saturn version shares character sprites with the PlayStation title Dragon Ball Z: Ultimate Battle 22. However, the gameplay is more faithful to the original Super Butōden trilogy, with traditional 2D backgrounds instead of pseudo-3D environments. The Saturn runs on high-quality 2D hardware, delivering larger, more detailed sprites with smoother animation than its PlayStation counterpart. The roster features 22 to 27 playable characters including Goku, Vegeta, Frieza, Cell, Majin Buu, and Mr. Satan. Critics praised the innovative modes, particularly Mr. Satan Mode. The game sold approximately 59,000 to 110,000 copies in Japan and never received an official release outside Japan.
